Workshop Description
The Cultural Audit is a tool designed by the Center for the Study of Religious Life to assist
religious congregations in becoming more aware of their internal culture and the influences of the U.S. dominant culture on their life and mission. It provides a language for discussing features of cultures.
The tool includes a set of materials—readings, questions, processes, and resources—for communities to use in group settings. Each community is encouraged to select materials in light of its particular needs and goals. Although there is a recommended order, the objectives a community sets will determine which sections will be useful.
In the workshop, participants will be given a general overview of sections of the Cultural Audit tool. Several of the exercises will be used and discussed. Some frameworks for comparing cultures will be introduced.
Prior to the workshop each participant will be asked to write a one-page description of a cross-cultural experience and to bring four copies of it with them.
Participants are encouraged to bring a copy of the Cultural Audit if they have one.
